In 2014, the heritage listed Glasgow School of Art, designed by architect Charles Rennie in 1897, was gutted by fire. Four years on, artwork made from the charred remains of the building have been auctioned with proceeds going to a restoration fund for the building. The 25 artists contributing the ‘Ash to Art’ project include Grayson Perry, Douglas Gordon, Tacita Dean, Rachel Whiteread, Antony Gormley, Jenny Saville, David Schrigley, Paula Rego and Anish Kapoor. At the recent Christie’s auction, Perry’s ceramic urn with the inscription Art Is Dead, Long Live Art sold for £27,500 while Kapoor’s work featuring charcoal in a perspex box fetched £100,000. To date £18.5m of the £32m target has been raised.
