‘The way we wear’, will showcase the work of ANU school of Art and Design staff and alumni in an exhibition at the Embassy of Australia in Washington DC. The selected works which display clothing and fashion as object and artefact, address ideas of wearable art through a variety of mediums from across the School’s eleven disciplines – with many artists taking an interdisciplinary approach.
The selected artists are working in fields that draw on the power of clothing and accessories as universally recognisable items, to engage the viewer with contemporary issues of personal and global importance. Exhibiting artists include: Rebecca Mayo, Dean Cross, Phoebe Porter, Larah Nott, Boya Yu, The uniform project: Alison Alder/Dan Edwards/ Megan Hinton, Jacqueline Bradley and Sian Watson. It is curated by Dr Charlotte Galloway acting direct of the Centre of art history and art theory (CAHAT).
ANU staff are also represented in Shanghai where Associate Professor Richard Whiteley will open a solo exhibition at the Shanghai Museum of Glass, that explores ideas of perceived and suggested spaces through voids cast in glass. The exhibition is curated by Holly Willians (the Curators Department Sydney) and has been sponsored by the Shanghai Museum of Glass and the Australia Council for the Arts.
Meanwhile in Leipzig, new Head of Sculpture Alex Martinis Roe opened her solo exhibition ‘Alliances’ at GfZK – Museum of Contemporary Art in November alongside the prize giving ceremony for the Future of Europe Prize of which she was the 2018 recipient.
